In the spring of 2021, RPS students were invited to submit ideas for our new middle school should be named. The criteria was that submissions must reflect the School District’s values and beliefs, represent the diversity within our community, and instill inspiration in students.

The School Board received hundreds of submissions, and a School Board subcommittee narrowed the list to five finalists. In September of 2021, community members voted on their favorite name and  we announced our new middle school would be named Dakota Middle School.

The word Dakota means “a friend or ally” and comes from the Native people who have lived in this area since the 1600s. A student nominator said, “I believe our new middle school should be named this to represent the first settlers of our area.” Dakota Middle School opened in the Fall of 2022.
